How 2 Go There

Planning, patience and pursuit. A big adventure doesn’t happen overnight but deals pop up and disappear sometimes in hours. You have to figure out where you want to go. Next, wait for a deal to pop up or award space or maybe even the right time of the week. Then book!

Cash, Miles and Points

How to pay for that trip? Mainly three ways, alone or in combination. Cash is simple (credit, debit, PayPal, etc.). Airline miles or hotel loyalty programs earned through flights, stays or credit card spending/sign-up bonuses. Transferable points through credit card spending (Chase, Amex, Citi, Capital One, etc.).

How to book?

Typically you’ll book airfare and car rentals through a third party travel site like Orbitz or Expedia. Hotels you don’t earn loyalty points unless you book directly through their websites (I.e. Hyatt.com or Hilton.com). Promotions pop up from time to time that may save money booking airfare and car rentals directly as well.

When to go?

It really depends on where. Winter in the Rockies will be far more expensive than early Spring. Summer in Europe almost will always be more than Spring or Fall. Shoulder season (typically spring or fall) can result it good weather and even better deals. Middle of winter in the US is middle of summer in Argentina. Hurricane season carries some risk for cancellations but also is more affordable and before kids go back to school for family travel. Google is definitely a friend for historical weather.
